Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Makeup, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography, capping off a successful awards season with recognition at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and BAFTA Awards.

Why it matters

  • The film, detailing the lifelong relationship between Bernstein and actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, features collaborations with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and performances by Isabel Leonard and Rosa Feola in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2.
  • “Maestro” will compete for the Best Picture award alongside other notable films, including American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest.
  • This is the second year in a row classical music figures into the Best Picture nominees at the Academy Awards. At the 2023 ceremony, Tár was nominated for the top honor, but ultimately lost to Everything Everywhere All at Once.
