Hungarian conductor Iván Fischer has been appointed the new Music Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra, adding to his roles as Music Director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Honorary Guest Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Fischer’s first project with the EUYO will be a summer residency in Grafenegg, Austria, followed by a tour to New York and concerts in Bolzano, Italy.
Why it matters:
- New educational initiative: Fischer’s appointment includes founding a European Orchestra Academy in collaboration with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, aiming to train future musical leaders and expand musicians’ roles in communities.
- Continuing legacy of excellence: Fischer’s leadership follows the successful tenure of Vasily Petrenko, ensuring ongoing high standards and performances for the EUYO, and fostering new collaborations and projects.
