Romanian violinist Eugene Sârbu has died at 73, leaving a significant legacy to the world of classical music.

Though not one of the most recognizable names of his generation of violinists, his stature enabled him to give the 1977 premiere of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Violin Concerto, for which he was also the dedicatee. He also won the Paganini and Carl Flesch international violin competitions in 1978, and he went on to solo with leading orchestras and conductors throughout the world.

Sârbu’s interpretation of the Sibelius Violin Concerto is especially well regarded, and he recorded it in 1981 with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Ole Schmidt.
