The Boston Symphony Orchestra appointed Nathan Cole as its new concertmaster, succeeding Malcolm Lowe who retired in 2019. Cole, who has been first associate concertmaster with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2011, will assume his new role at the start of the BSO’s 2024 Tanglewood season in July.

Why it matters:

  • Solidifying BSO leadership: This appointment is significant as it brings a highly experienced and respected violinist to a pivotal leadership position within the BSO, promising to influence the orchestra’s artistic direction and performance quality.
  • Continuity and legacy: Cole’s selection as only the fourth concertmaster in 104 years underscores the importance of this role in maintaining the BSO’s storied legacy and ensuring continuity in its musical excellence.
